Did anyone see John Daly last week playing golf shirtless and shoeless while smoking a cigarette. I can only say that it was one of the saddest sights ever in the game of golf. We have seen some sad demises like Greg Norman losing the 6-shot lead to Nick Faldo at the 96 Masters never to be heard from again, but nothing will compare to the demise and probably certain fall off from professional golf then John Daly over the past few months.
If anyone had ever predicted that John Daly would have one 2 major championships back in the summer of 1992, as he was the 9th alternate driving all night to make his tee-time at Crooked Tree Golf Club for the PGA championship, where he won easily, they would have been laughed right off the course.
The raw talent and the way he connected with everyday real golfers was a combination that had potential to bring golf to the masses similar to what Tiger is doing today. But what followed his two major championships is a sad story that would be the making of a comedy film starring the likes of only Chris Farley if he where alive today.
I even thought, had he been playing decent, in the top 30 this year, that captain Paul Azinger would pick him as a captains pick on the Ryder Cup just to get the Kentucky crowd going crazy at the thought of him playing for his country right in front of the people that love him. Unfortunately that will never happen.
We can only hope that John finds a path back to reality and gets his life in order because at the end of the day his legacy should not be what he is going through now, but rather being remember as the fun loving long ball hitting kid from Arkansas who was the closest thing to a weekend golfer the PGA Tour ever saw.
Just a clarification to the last post...John Daly won the PGA at Crooked Stick in Indianapolis...Not the mentioned Crooked Tree, which is in Oklahoma
